Nearly three quarters of shoppers expect to pay a discounted rate for purchases – according to a new poll.

The research, by RoxyPalace.com, found that 74% of consumers believed they were entitled to a discount when buying consumer items, regardless of price.

Of those polled nearly one in five (19%) said they refused to pay full price for anything, choosing instead to scour the internet for discount offers.

Food, clothing, travel and experience days were the most common items which consumers expected to make savings on – with many using discount sites and loyalty schemes to do so.

Interestingly those polled stated that they expected larger discounts online than shopping in store as they were aware that selling via the internet was cheaper for retailers.

Women were revealed to be more discount savvy than men with 65% compared to just 41% of males admitting to searching for a discount offer before making a purchase.

Those polled also admitted to be more willing to pay full price for luxury, high-end items.

Nearly all (95%) of those surveyed said they expected the number of discounts on offer to grow substantially in the next two years.

A spokesman for RoxyPalace.com said the ‘discount nation’ trend was only going to grow in the future.

He said: “Shoppers have seen their finances squeezed over the last few years and retailers have been forced to offer discounts in a bid to tempt spending. However, as discounts have increasingly become commonplace – both online and on the high street – it seems consumers now feel they are unwilling to pay full price – and who can blame them?

“Once you start cutting prices to attract shoppers it can quickly lead to prices plummeting which is great for consumers and terrible for retailers. However, the view of many shoppers seems to be that if a retailer can afford to offer 50% off and still make a profit then why should they pay more just to boost their profits?

“It’s so easy to save money nowadays and can usually be done through a simple Google search so it’s no surprise shoppers are looking for and then using discounts time and time again.”

He concluded: “With it recently announced that the UK was again officially back in recession it’s anticipated that discount offerings will grow in size and range over the coming years.”

Far from the widely held belief of parents falling in love with their offspring at first sight, the survey by RoxyPalace.com, showed that 18% of mums and dads owned up to being privately disappointed with the looks of their new arrivals.

But a loyal 82% said they proudly believed their new baby was the most beautiful thing they had ever seen.

The poll quizzed 1000 parents on their feelings and reactions when they first clapped eyes on their babies.

A resounding 99% said they did feel they had fallen in love with their baby the moment they saw them.

But of the 18% who admitted being disappointed by the looks of their child, more than half (52%) had discussed their feelings with their partners but only eight per cent said they had spoken to anyone else about it.

Instead it seems the vast majority suffer their disappointment in silence, choosing to put on the brave face society expects.

One father of two who asked to remain anonymous said: “There is a lot of pressure on new parents in all kinds of ways and this is something that remains taboo and just isn’t talked about.

“Everyone seems to think they have the most beautiful baby on earth and as a new parent you feel you have to say the same even if you privately believe your baby looks like Satan’s afterbirth.

“My daughter is three now and she is gorgeous but when she arrived she was the most disgusting little thing I’d ever seen. She had a face only a mother could love, but even my wife admitted she was ugly.

“She was our second child and we knew we were being objective because when our eldest girl was born we had been convinced she was beautiful. When number two arrived we both felt very differently.

“It doesn’t mean you love them any less of course. In fact it brings out some very intense feelings of protection. You really feel you have to root for them in life because they aren’t as good looking.

“I totally understand why all parents say their child is gorgeous even if they really think they fell out of the ugly tree and got hit by every branch on the way down. It’s just not something you ever feel you can admit to anyone else and you do get offended if anyone ever dares to suggest your baby isn’t beautiful.”

A spokesman for RoxyPalace.com said the poll revealed that surprising numbers of parents admitted to being disappointed with their baby’s looks.

He said: “As human beings we are wired to love our babies and the poll overwhelmingly supports the theory that we all fall in love with our offspring at first sight.

“But interestingly loving your baby doesn’t have to mean that you think it is beautiful. It seems that every parent feels a pressure to say their new baby is beautiful but only four out of five actually believe it.

“Yet the remaining fifth who secretly feel their baby is ugly don’t love them any less and may even feel the need to spoil them more than they would a good looking baby.”

The research, by online casino RoxyPalace.com, found that 11% of bachelors would rather get their hands on the recently released gadget than a new love interest.

And three per cent of those polled said they’d happily leave a current partner if they were rewarded with the gadget.

Women were shown to be more social creatures with 84% stating that they would prefer a new partner than the tablet.

Interestingly just four per cent of those surveyed said they would prefer a non-Apple tablet computer to a new partner.

Ironicially, of those polled just under half (44%) said they ‘had used an app to help resolve a relationship problem’ with 15% ‘regularly consulting the internet for relationship advice.’

The poll also revealed that the tablet could help in building new relationships with nearly three quarters of those quizzed (71%) stating that they would prefer to use FaceTime to talk with a prospective partner before meeting them.

A spokesman for RoxyPalace.com said regardless of the phenomenal demand for the product, the results came as a shock.

He said: “There has been a huge amount of hype surrounding the iPad 3 and for many it’s the ultimate gadget, but instead of simply giving up their hard earned cash it seems some men would be happy to remain on the shelf if it meant taking one home with them.

“The Apple product has a wide variety of functions but even the latest version can’t offer some of the things that a new romance can – but it seems many males are happy to forego this.

“Many women joke about becoming football widows when the season is in full swing but it seems some men are willing to take things a step further and are happy to steer clear of relationships all together to spend more time with their beloved toy.

“Women were found to be much more sociable than men, with only a small percentage willing to put their love life on hold to get the new iPad.”

New figures released by one of the UK’s leading online casino shows more women than ever are placing bets on their PCs and also reveals that they are willing to risk more of their cash than men.
